Background

World Service Corps is a program through the Community of Christ Church for volunteers to learn from other cultures and share with the people at their assigned site. There are short term assignments in the summer, as well as long term assignments of 1 or 2 years.

Why am I doing this? When I was about 11 years old, Sherri and Jac Kirkpatrick came to my church and showed me what they had been doing in Africa. I knew at that time that I was supposed to go help people in Africa someday myself. When I was 16, my summer church camp counselor had just come back from a trip to Africa with World Service Corps, and that was how I first heard of the program. Volunteers go to many different countries (not just Africa). This year there are volunteers going to South Korea, Ukraine, the UK, India, Canada, and more. Since hearing about the program, I have planned on participating in World Service Corps during a summer in college. I have always wanted to help people in Africa, and by doing this I will be able to make connections there and have a foundation to help more in the future.

What will I be doing? I will be sharing with church members in the Chingola, Zambia area. This could possibly includes personal testimonies or preaching as well as children's ministries. We will also be helping with some surveys and other things for a program that is getting started for AIDS orphans. I don't really know the full details of all we will be doing in the two months there, but I will write about them here as they happen.

We leave on June 1st, and land in South Africa on June 2nd. There is a 7 hour time difference between the time there and Central time in the US. We will go to Botswana for a couple days and then back to South Africa to fly to Zambia.
